System hangs after first stage of XP pro installation

I'm having trouble installing windows on my sata hard drive. I get all the way to the end of the first stage of installation, and windows says it's going to reboot, and finish the installation. When it reboots though, it goes through the POST, and then i see the blinking _ and then the system hangs, the dvd drive seems to spin the dvd, but then just stops. If I reboot, and choose to boot from the windows disk, it just starts the installation all over. What am I doing wrong here?

System specs:
ASRock 775Dual-880Pro mobo
Celeron D pentium 4 64 bit
1 gig Gskill DDR Pc3200
Maxtor Diamondmax 250 Gig SATA HDD
NVIDIA Geforce 6600 AGP 8x graphics card

During the early part of the install,

when it asks to hit F6 if you need to install SCSI drievers, that also applies to SATA drivers. Did you prepare the floppy with the SATA drivers on it to use when the install program asked you to insert the floppy???
