system file error

Feb 4, 2004 9:16AM PST

I have a pentium 1 200mhz running win 98. I am installing a wireless linksys router. when i install the software for linksys i get the system file error. it says "the following system files have been replaced with older versions of a program you recently ran. these files are currently in use and cannot be automatically repaired. windows may not run correctly until you exit and restart windows so these files may be automatically repaired. The file in question is c:\windows\system\ddeml.dll

When i restart the system i get the same message now on reboot.

i tried to replace the file with a different one in dos but it would not allow me to. Telling me there is a sharing violation reading drive c:

I tried attrib ddeml.dll -r -s -h Sharing violation again. This system was already working with a different linksys nic card with a cable.

Help.

I usually find a boot to SAFE MODE and maybe use of SFC to help.

i tried sfc and it found no corrupt files. I also tried to download ddeml.dll from this site http//sundial.freeyellow.com/ddeml.htm that i found on google. Nortons told me i had a virus on the a: drive. Every floppy i try to format now. I am told the disk is not formattable. I am running a system virus scan with nortons now.
Any more suggestions?

Looks like either a virus nasty or the hardware is failing.

Since there was no explanation in your prior thread concerning exactly what was accomplished/done when running the System File Checker/SFC, there was no purpose of replaying. Please note, the article [Q192832] warns that when using the System File Checker (Sfc.exe) tool to restore a file (for example, the User.exe, Gdi.exe, Setupx.dll or Krnl386.exe file) from a cabinet (.cab), the wrong version of the file may be extracted. This can result in the inability to start Windows (for example, the computer may stop responding/hang) or a Windows Protection Error messages may be rendered. This article explains that after starting the computer, a user should extract the correct file.

98 is an interesting operating system, you should try to disable or disconnect your hardware, and then try to install your new hardware configuration,EX: rememeber you must also disconnect usb devices to install new ones, or errors will occur, and the hardware may not work properly.

Thanks for all the interesting info. I tried the scanreg / restore at command prompt to no avail. still error loading user.exe msg. you must reinstall windows. I know this drive has about had it. I'm running nortons pro on it now. Oh by the way i hate reinstalling windows on drives i still have info i want on it. So i copied all windows and windows\sys files over from a junk drive and now i can boot up. But im back to my ddeml.exe msg. I think I'm going to take cowboys suggestion now. I will read and apply the article and see what happens. Thank you
