Something strange in your story.
You write about recovery from the HP recovery disks, and your write about sp3. That can't be, because this machine is so old, that it can't have the original recovery disks with sp3.
After you installed the recovery disks, everything should be as fine as when the machine was new. If it isn't, there most likely is some hardware issue. However, since all you tell is "not so", that makes it difficult to comment.
I'd redo the recovery. A virus scan shouldn't find anything on it, and if it does, it's a false positive, so better exclude it so it will be left alone in the future. Then install sp3 from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24 and all other updates.
Of course you realize that XP is at the end of its live-cycle.
