system error

operating system is windows xp
gateway ev700 i keep getting this error 16 bit windows subsystem: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft windows application. Choose ?close? to terminate the application. What should I do?

you are trying to run a DOS or 16bit program that is crashing - does this occur when you run a particular program or when you login? - the file Autoexec.NT is similar to the old dos based systems like DOS, Win3.1,9X &ME that used to have a file called autoexec.bat which was loaded during boot.- In XP if you run a DOS/16 bit program it automatically calls the autoexec.NT file to emulate DOS - the file is located in c:\win\system32
Use a text editor to look at this file as it is essentially a batch file and see if you can see any thing which has been added. If you like you can email me the contents (see my profile).
