system/dal.hll corrupt or missing file...can Anyone help?

When I turned on my computer, using the power button, I got this message, and I am dead in the water. I had Windows Xp Pro. I only wanted to recover my Outlook files for contacts and pertinent emails.

One friend tried to recover from the reboot disk, but could not get to directories, or anything to get any data.

Please help or advise what to do from here? I have limited skills but am trying to trouble shoot and repair on my own.

Here's what I do daily it seems.

I boot up some Linux LIVE CD. Heck, I don't even install Linux. I don't know it's Linux. I mouse around to the C drive and copy the file out to some USB stick or drive.
