What FSB does that mobo support??
Jan 3, 2005 6:04AM PST

Does it support Dual hannel Memory??

Unfortunately the 32 bit AMD's with 400 MHz FSB are priced up with the 64 bit versions, because AMD wants to phase out the 32 bitters because the 64 bitters are excellent.

Where did you hear about a a limit on the lifetime on your existing CPU???? That's pure BS, Properly cooled it could outlive you.

Definitely DO NOT get a PCI video card [unless you were talking PCI Express, but then you have no choice, it is either PCI-X or AGP, the mobo only has one of those types on it].

I'm using a SOYO-KT600 Dragon Plus v2.0 The 2.0 supports 400 FSB, I also had a ver 1 which doesn't. Not sure what the Ultra is.

I'm using a 2700+ Barton core, and a cheap NVIDIA MX type card. I'm not a gamer or speed freak. I never even defrag, so whatever speed the thing runs at is fine with me. LOL

your mobo

support socket A cpu, they are not that great, so you will have to buy the higher end ones to make it respectable. you should get the fastest RAM it can support which is DDR400/PC3200. You can find the parts for cheap at WhoSave.com. your video card has to be AGPx8. You can go with the last generation ATI Radeon 9800. They are cheaper now and can still run fine with the newest games.

Good basic advice
Jan 3, 2005 5:06PM PST

You can find out alot about the parts by going to Newegg.com to start with: a lot of the parts have reviews by users. The AMD XPs 2400 to 3000 with 333 FSB speed are a bit of a "bargain" You will pay $150 to $190 for a 300 /3200 400 FSB chip At that point you have maxed out your board and system there is no place to speed it up. The slower XPs with good RAM 1G and a ATI 9800 card will do almost as well. And not damage the savings account too badly.

Try the comparison sites!

Different sites have better prices on one thing or another; thecomparison site let you find the best prices on each (though if there's not much difference, you may save more than the difference on shipping by combining orders). My three favorites are CNet's own http://shopper.cnet.com, www.pricegrabber.com, and www.epinions.com. I use a combination of total price and store rating to decide where to buy (though for some reason Amazon doesn't rate that highly, but I've never had ANY problems with it).

What i would do....
Jan 4, 2005 11:37AM PST

If i had your MOBO i would put the following in it. This total comes to around $570. You can shop around using www.pricegrabber.com to find the cheapest places.

1.Lite-On Black 52X32X52 CD-RW Drive, Model LTR-52327S, OEM (THIS THING IS AMAZING, AND FAST. I ONLY TRUST LITE-ON--btw this thing is only $22--you will be blazin on the dls)

2.Seagate 80GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive, Model ST380013AS, OEM (Seagate is awesome, or get a WD--you support serial, so go for the fastes, this one also has 8mb cache)

3.Kingmax 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 - OEM (yes not the most common brand, but it came out about a year ago or so and i have not had a single problem with it. I put it in all my clients computers.)

4.AMD Athlon XP 3200+ "Barton", 400MHz FSB, 512K Cache Processor - Retail(personally i love the XPs, never had a problem, great to overclock--barton core is excelent. get the retail--it comes with a heatsink and fan. THey work very well--no problems---you could go with a lesser version of the xp but stay with the barton. This one is $207 you could save by going with a lesser one, but this one is well worth it.)

5. nVIDIA GeForce 6600GT Video Card, 128MB GDDR3, 128-Bit, DVI/TV-Out, PCI-Express, Model "6600PCX" -RETAIL
(i love the nVIDIA GeForce series . this one is more of a bargin but if you can afford to up the price for an even better one i would go with the geforce FX5950 ULTRA or the new or the geforce 6800 GT/or ULTRA---the three are expensive and serious cards.)

Hope this helps. There are ways to help the price if you are on a budget. BTW i did all the priceing @ newegg.com, i use ebuyer.com, and zipzoomfly.com[no tax & no shipping on almost 80% of the products] also. Again you can use pricegrabber.com to search for the cheapest site.
