System Bell Doesn't ring in telnet sessions

I'm unable to get the system bell to ring in Windows XP from communications programs. The ^G doesn't ring the bell in my telnet sessions, either Windows telnet or other programs.

If I open a DOS box I can get a sound from the CPU speaker with "echo ^G".

I've tried the ^G (^V^G) and \a from linux sessions. The settings in the Control Panel seem correct with sounds set for all Windows Events. No other sound problems that I've notices.

Any ideas?

The stock telnet.exe may not ding.

http://www.georgiasoftworks.com/docs/usersguide.pdf and other commercial products and what other telnets do ding.

This is a cosmetic item that Microsoft is unlikely to fix, but do ask them.
