System 32 folder appears on Boot up

Jul 7, 2007 11:37AM PDT

When I boot up my computer the system 32 folder appears. I would like to get rid of this unscheduled appearance. There is no mention of System 32 in msconfig so I cannot simply uncheck a box and have it not start up. I did find a MS article on this problem; http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=170086, but it calls for editing the registry and as the directions are not too clear, I am afraid to do this on my own for fear of fouling something critical. I am fine with the instructions till the last step where they call for editing Value data. If someone knowledgable with the registry could give me some detailed directions I would like to try to eliminate System 32 from appearing. Computer info (if needed) is in my profile.

Howmu, Go to the link below and download & run the "System32 Folder Opens Upon Boot" vbs Fix. It's Number 260 in the right side column. It has worked for others. Download .vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double
click the vbs file. You will be prompted when the script is done.

"NOTE: If your anti-virus software warns you of a "malicious" script, this is normal if you have "Script Safe" or similar technology enabled. These scripts are not malicious, but they do make changes to the System Registry".

It may correct the problem.

Thanks for the try

But it didn't work. Got the message "could not repair this problem as the expected value could not be found" I think I will have to find a way to change the value data. Also, when the system 32 folder appears I get the little search flashlight for close to a minute before the files appear in the displayed folder. I don't know if this is significant.

You may have to go into the registry, but you can try this long shot

Install CCLEANER,there are three versions available.I use the slim version which is english only and no yahoo tool bar.

When you use ccleaner use the "issues button" then use the cleaner button, reboot ans see what happens.

CCleaner didn't do it either

I had never used the "Issues" button before so it was well worth the try but after cleaning everything, I still get the systems 32 folder. Do you think it's worth getting the paid version of Registry Mechanic to do this job for me?

OK

The link in your first post doesn't work,at least for me it doesn't.

This LINK mentions msconfig, but suggests for this " /l:eng".It seemed to work for that person.

You might consider scanning in safe mode, try AVG ANTI SPYWARE

You could try another reg cleaner but some of them can be very aggressive and can cause problems which is why I use ccleaner.

I used to use REG SEEKER,just be careful before deleting.

It didn't work for me either when I tried it but this one should be better. Hopefully you will glean something from this that I couldn't. Thank you for all your trouble. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/170086

Can you find this in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Having a problem

posting the screen shot. I opened the registry key to "Run" and took a screen shot but I am having trouble posting it into the reply box. I copy it but when I try to paste it into the reply box, the Paste option is greyed out. I can post it into a word document with no problem but not into this message body box. I could send it to you as an attachment in your email or I could copy it manually into this message box. Please advise.

When you navigate to both HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CURRENT_USER,is that what you see.

This is a screen shot of my registry, see the word RUN

You could use IMAGE SHACK

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Did you try the link in my previous post?

Are you able to post a screen shot of the registry?

This LINK mentions this entry in the registry " hpppt\ICON "

My registry (RUN"
Jul 8, 2007 10:25AM PDT

Looks like yours, but instead of just the default listing, I have 8 others, namely Zone Alarm, Avast, Auto Run software, iTunes helper, Spy catcher, Start Lockspam, Start OE Hooker and z Browser Launcher. I deleted two of them , Namely Web Search and KHALMNPR and still have these others. Can I safely eliminate any of the others and if I do will it help? I'll try system restore but I don't think it goes back far enough.

I hope you backed up before deleting just in case.Be very careful deleting registry entries.

I wouldn't delete any more.

If you do decide to delete, follow these steps, file>export>then save.

Lets see if SR works.

System Restore could take you back and the problem would go away.

That's only if it hasn't been too long.

Another question
Jul 10, 2007 4:34AM PDT

What is lockspam Pro?

Did you just install this program?

Try system Restore first. Go back to the time you first started getting this System32 folder opening. I had it open one day and went to System Restore. It went away. I do NOT have a cat in my registry, I looked. I like dogs better. I have a Yellow Lab!

Scan for viruses and spyware, preferably in the safe mode.

I use

Avast Virus Protection

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

C W Shredder

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Spybot Search & Destroy

http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html

AVG Anti-Spyware

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-spyware/us/frt/0

Run full scans and see if you come up with anything.

Thank you all for your help but,
Jul 10, 2007 8:23AM PDT

I have tried everything you suggested with no luck. The SR did't go back far enough but I did try it anyway. To answer other questions, The lockspam pro is an antispam program, quite old. The cat is simply my pointer which I forgot to move out of the way before taking a screenshot. All the AV and Antispyware programs, and adware programs suggested were tried, plus a few more. Special thanks to Tom for posting my registry image. I intend to keep working on this issue and if I solve it I will post the solution.
