I'd look at Anapod, other such replacements and see if there is any mention of use with WMP.

I was wondering the same thing a while ago.
I got a new harddrive for my rig and itunes wasn't installing originally. I had WMP11 running one day and I plugged in my shuffle to use as a flash drive, and I'm 85% sure that WMP recognized it and said something about syncing it. I posted on the mp3 forums about it, but I don't think anyone responded to the post about whether or not you could do something like that, or even if you could, if the player would work after the files were put on it. Maybe the key is to not have itunes installed?? im not sure.
I allowed it to sync(wmp11)! it does appear to sync but when I unplug the shuffle and run it I am not able to play the music sync via wmp11 .. although I do have itunes installed ... has any one else tried ?
I plugged in an iPod Shuffle into an old PC that had RealPlayer 10 installed. I was happy to discover that it allows me to update the Shuffle without requiring I replace all the music like iTunes wanted to do (since it is plugged in on a new computer).
I does require I shut down iTunes and the Shuffle set as USB drive.
