I sync through iTunes from my MacBook Pro. My calendar syncs fine but my contacts don't sync at all. Any advice would be most welcome.

That would solve your issue immediately IME.
And I suggest you get used to this scenario, or at least find a way to make it work for you, because in the not so far away future it will be the more supported way to backup our contacts.

I was specifically asking if you had the Contacts, on your Mac, set to sync in iTunes, something that you did not mention.

iTunes on its own has no "Contacts" database or app. So to sync your contacts you need something for iTunes to sync that to. Here's a discussion showing sync with some Contacts' App.
