Syncing files between 2 locations

Jul 16, 2007 2:37AM PDT

Hi All
I have a mac server running 10.4 in location 1 and I have been given the task of putting a mac user in our other location that has no Mac server. What I want to do is put a NAS device in the second location as a "server" for the new users, and have the files synced between our main location and this NAS device so users at both locations have access to the files from either location. The main location also has my tape backup, so everything would be backed up. I have a dual T1 dedicated connection between sites.

After some research, it seems like the ReadyNAS 1100 is my best bet. It is one of the few that supports the AFP protocol. I read about rsync, and it seems like it needs to be installed at both locations, which won't be possible if I purchase a NAS device.

If there was some way to just have the Mac server in the main location control the syncing, that would be ideal. Even if there is a software package I would need to purchase, that would be fine. Any suggestions?

Thanks

This may be oversimplification, but,

with a dual T1 connecting the sites, couldn't the remote users connect directly to location 1?

reason for this...

The graphics files they will be working with are huge. Opening files over the link would take forever, even with the dual T1s...

It would be nice to have everything sync up in the background. Would love a program that just syncs the changes, but i'm sure i'm asking for a lot. I'd also like to have it set up if one person deletes from a server, it would be gone on both sides, just to keep some organization.

Since the backup server is in the main location, having data synced and ready for the overnight backup would be nice.

readynas supports rsync

I have a ReadyNAS and it supports rsync. You should be able to rsync to/from your mac server and the NAS box.

I tried Chronosync, and it seems to work pretty good. I didn't know The ReadyNAS supported rsync. I'll have to try that as well, and see what the performance difference is..

Not too experienced with the command line stuff, but i'll try it out.

Thanks all
