It's not uncommon to wipe it off the machine with their method or tools, then reinstall, update it to get it working.
If this is a rant, please ignore my advice and observations.

I had gotten Norton Internet Security Pro online some 13 months ago. When the subscription expired I renewed, but continued to get an annoying message stating that I had not. The product works and the website shows the correct renewal date. To eliminate the message Symantec tells me to 1. delete some files; 2. uninstall the product; 3. reinstall the product.
Had I followed their advice, assuming that the product would be available by download to correct their software error, I would have had to buy the product again or subscribe to their Download Service. This is tantamount to extortion. The renewal is expensive enough. Symantec has little incentive to keep their renewal process bug-free if bugs cause a revenue increase.
When a company is run by bean-counters and weasels, one cannot discount the possibility that the outcome I have expereinced is intended.
