Yes. You can add a router and it will work fine.
So far a cable modem with builtin router is not a mainstream product.

I previously had a local network using a Netgear hub and a cisco 678 dsl modem (router?). I just moved and want to have a similar wired network, but cannot get dsl and have to get cable broadband. Local company wants to charge to set it up and I do NOT want them messing with my equipment. Can I just get the cable modem from them and add a router to my network so that all my computers can use the internet connection or do I need something else? What kind of router or gateway will I need in addition to the cable modem? Are there any products that combine these functions? Thanks in advance for you help.
