This has been driving me nuts too. I am currently using conventional PC speakers, with a Logitech USB headset for Skype.
I set the default audio device to Realtek AC97 Audio. If I use Skype, then click on a radio station, and the sound comes out of the headset.
Back to control panel: Default Device is now Logitech USB Headet.
Who is doing this? Skype or Windows.
I guess I have to switch to USB speakers.

I added a Gigaware USB Headphone Set to a Dell Dimension E510 Desktop. I want to use it with Skype. The instructions basically were to plug it in. Since I usually stream music through my desktop speakers while I am using my computer, I wanted to understand how to switch back and forth to the headset and what that might require. I am frequently further away from the computer than the length of the headset cord will reach.
This is how I have been doing it. I go through this sequence of mouse clicks and then I have to restart. I thought I saw something that said you should be able to just go from one to the other without having to close out of everything, or that the sound should be coming out of the headset and the speakers simultaneously.
Is the following procedure my only choice?
Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 Build 2600
Start / Control Panel / Sounds and Audio Devices / Sounds and Audio Devices Properties
Volume Tab (same as volume icon in the task bar)
Audio Tab
/ Sound playback Default device: C-Media USB Headphone Set
/ Sound recording Default device: C-Media USB Headphone Set
Voice Tab ? Is this something that can be ignored for normal use, or should it be switched too?
/ Voice playback Default device: C-Media USB Headphone Set
/ Voice recording Default device: C-Media USB Headphone Set
The Previous Default for these was Sigma Tel Audio
Buttons in Dialog Box used to effect change: first Apply, then OK
Restart is necessary for changes to take effect.
Switching back - is it only necessary to change the Sound playback Default device to Sigma Tel Audio? - and to Restart?
Thank you
