Switch and modem for fax machine

by psaulm119 / March 3, 2009 3:56 AM PST

I am trying to connect an HP L7500 all-in-one fax to an older setup. It is a DLS line that runs through an older Westell Wirespeed B90-series modem. The problem I?m having is that this modem only has one Ethernet port, whereas I need to connect my laptop and this fax, both with Ethernet cables (neither will connect to the modem with a USB).

My options are to use a switch, or just get a new modem. I have a Linksys 5-port switch (Model EZXS55W) that I can hook up to the current modem; I also just bought a Verizon Wireless DSL Gateway (I wanted to be prepared--I can return the item I won't use to BestBuy).

My questions: can I expect the switch to work relatively well with the modem that is currently in use? I?d rather not install this if I?m going to have to return and troubleshoot in another month. On the other hand, the switch was 25 as opposed to 90 bucks, so I?d certainly like to use it if I can.

The switch should be fine

A modem that had more than one LAN port would just have a built in switch anyway.
