Question

svchost.exe

Jul 28, 2016 12:35PM PDT

My computer is pretty old, maybe eight or nine years old. But i don't ask a lot of it, and it has always worked well for what i need it to do. i am running Windows 7 and keep it clean and virus free. But recently, within the past few weeks, it has started to run very slowly.

It had been a couple years since i last formatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows, so i just went ahead and did that. It did not help.

So i checked Windows Task Manager and nearly all my CPU usage is going to one of the svchost.exe processes. The services it is associated with are wuauserv, Winmgmt, Themes, ShellHWDetection, SENS, Schedule, ProfSvc, Lanmanserver, iphlpsvc, gpsvc, Browser, Appinfo and AeLookupSvc.

i set the priority of that process to Below Normal and other programs on my computer are running properly again. But as my CPU usage is still constantly 100% i am assuming that is not a real solution. Can anyone tell me how to actually solve the problem?

If you just installed a fresh copy of the OS and all the proper drivers then you can expect the machine to be quite busy for a while just between winup and indexing.

I don't use indexing so I turn that feature off.

Needed features and services are a user specific thing so you custom tailor it to fit your needs.

unless you manually updated after installing, win7 will have several years of updates to catch up on. This will take a few days.In addition, search indexing is taking place which you can disable.

finally, you do have an older computer. Like us humans, hardware will also tend to slow down with age. Also consider newer version of software will tend to slow down computers, especially if you are using internet security suites like nortons.
