SUSE 9.3/ KDE Setting up a connection to a wireless network?

Oct 28, 2005 7:30AM PDT

Well im absolutely brand new to linux and i would like to learn how to connect to a wireless network. I am using a dlink dwl-g650 to connect to my home wifi network. 802.11 g, 64 bit hexadecimal encryption. If anyone knows the very basic concept of setting up a wirless network connection, I would greatly appreciate if u could explain it to me as you would your grandmother.
Thx in advance,
CH

The Atheros 650 or the Prism chipset 650?
Oct 28, 2005 7:38AM PDT

The Atheros will just work. I have the Prism based card and never got it to work. Now I have Suse 10.0 and will have to try it again.

A tip about "64 bit hexadecimal encryption." Get your network to work without that, then enable WEP.

Cheers,

Bob

Thanks, but...

I have the atheros based card, so that's good news. ummm now maybe im confused here but doesnt WEP stand for wireless encryption protocol? If that's is correct then i believe i do have it enabled and my encryption is a 10 hexadecimal digit code, hence 64 bit. i appreciate the response but i am very noobish, what would help me is if someone would tell me literally what menu tree etc. to navigate to get to the place where i configure the wireless connection.
Thx again,
CH.

Re: Wlan setup

Hi! Here you have the admin guide. There are a lot of info to get into some knowledge about wireless (page 345)
http://www.novell.com/documentation/suse93/pdfdoc/admin93-screen/admin93-screen.pdf

Follow the DLINK manual to load your dsl provider data into the wireless ruter (I understand that it is already running, so maybe you don't need this step) Then, Use Yast to configure your wireless network card. I have read that the card is supported.

Good luck !

That's just what i needed. Yah the router is already configured. I can do all of this in the windows world in about 3 seconds, but im brand spanking new to linux so i really appreciate your help.
Thx for the brief jargon free and ultr helpful answer,

Oooh bummer,

Well i got the card setup properly, however, my card is yet to see the wireless signal, or any for that matter. It doesnt see my neighbors unencrypted either.
If u have any thoughts id appreciate it very much if u could drop me a line.
Thx,
CH

Try it again, but go without WEP for now.

When I first set it up there are 2 things I always run into.

1. The router firmware may be out of date.

Hint: Tell the make/model and what firmware you have in it.

2. When it doesn't work, try it with WEP disabled. Once it's working we can move up to WEP.

Yahh ok thx.

Yah i was gonna do that but i was slightly hesitant cuz i have to convince my dad that if i touch the router it wont explode in to flames, as opposed to what happens when he plays with it.
Thx,
Cully

What happens?

Sorry to read that.

Here's my personal story. My dl-524 would not work with WEP even though the signal was strong, connected. A firmware update and now it works.

Best of luck,

Bob
