SUSE 9.2 LINUX hangs on Armada E500

Aug 19, 2005 9:34AM PDT

I'm running SUSE 9.2 KDE desktop on a Compaq Armada E500 1Ghz with 512MB and an ESS Maestro onboard sound card.

If I hit the up or down volume button (or both to mute) the system hangs up and the only way to get it cleared is to unplug power and the battery (power switch will not even work). Software control of the sound card works. This is a new installation and I'm somewhat new to LINUX, though I am familiar with UNIX. I've also been running Windows 2000 Pro on this machine without any problems.

Any thoughts appreciated.
John

Try Suse 9.3

With each version I've found less bugs and better hardware support.

Same prob. (kinda)

I had a CD-ROM --> Laptop problem. When I inserted the plug for the cd-rom drive (or took it out) when the distro was loaded, the kernel panicked and froze the computer. It seems as though the same thing is happening with your computer. I suggest allowing YAST2 to download the lastest kernel patches if it hasn't already. That solved my problem-- and hopefully yours.

YAST and 9.3

Did that. I suspect it a problem with the Maestro driver. I'll continue googling. I have 9.3 but have not installed it. I'll probably give that a shot.

Thanks,
John
