SuSE 10.0 Continued 3d graphics not avail and ATI Radeon9800

Oct 18, 2005 5:45AM PDT

Thought the new version would fix my 3dgraphics problems and according to novell the video card has full native support. One query into card and monitor lists the card as an RH350NH and another approach sees two cards and does list the 9800 as a secondary card. Arrrrrggh! 3d drivers from xorg get me system errors till I get rid of them and supposedly there is a 3d driver on the dvd but yast2 can't find it. Nor can I figger out how to get the right card seen. have re-installed several times (clean installs). Thanks all

Ok, I give up. What nvidea 3d works
Oct 19, 2005 3:46AM PDT

I give up, no help with the ATI in almost 50 discussions across the net. I only get told to get an nvidea but I got very low bucks to do the change with. Do want as much 3d and speed as I can get but I can't drop another 400$
Someone out there must be running SuSE 10.0 and getting 3d. Is it a KDE vs Gnome problem. (I use KDE)

SuSE isn't on the "3d" bus, yet
Oct 27, 2005 10:17PM PDT

I've seen lots and lots of trouble with SuSE and 3d cards. The best luck I've seen is the Nvidia 6800's using the RedHat reference drivers for full 3d support. Good luck getting ANY newer generation ATI cards to work right...ATI just doesn't care about the Linux market. I worked at a Linux server company as a Top-tier support rep for awhile, and I can tell you, if you're using anything other than a Rage3d Pro chipset, forget about support from ATI.
There are TONS of suggestions and advice on Nvidia's linux forums. Check them out, do a little research, and you should get a 3rd generation Nvidia card for less than $200 that will support any 3d applications you run on it.

Heh. After this post, would you believe that I'm an ATI all the way? It's true; I just don't use them in my Linux boxes Happy

SuSE Support no help for 9800 pro

Thanks for the insight, sorry I didn't get back sooner.
Here in Davie FL we got our clock cleaned by WILMA and have had no power or phones. I'm lucky; I only had to go 9 or 10 days and dsl isn't really yet but I'm up!

Suse 3d and Nvidia
Nov 12, 2005 10:02PM PST

I dug out my parts box, have several radeon ati's but must have discarded or given away my rage cards.
I do have a working asus gforce2 with 32meg ddr on board.
Did a clean install of Suse10.0 and downloaded the Nvidia drivers when during the install it wanted to check for updates online. when the system re-booted it recognised the gf2 but I still can't enable 3d. have xorg 11 v8 something installed as I was told xfree would not fly under suse. with xorg8+ installed I went for the ati propriatory (sp?) drivers after failing to get the nvidia to allow 3d and still can't get the card recognised properly. Can you offer any suggestions?
email reply ok.

I'm not sure, but aren't those drivers available through YOU(YaST Online Update.) Chech that out.

Nope they aren't that I can find

I only can find Gforce drivers and all my cards are ATI radeons, found a gforce 2 or 3 in my old parts box but I still can get the drivers and 3d software to work.
Gonna have a go at xandros on a newly built box dedicated to linux.
Thank you for your input.
