Surround Sound Question

Sep 21, 2006 6:07AM PDT

I just bought a Pioneer 7.1 Channel A/V Receiver. The speakers I just bought is a 5.1 package. The receiver has a spot for Front Speakers (right left), center speaker, Surround speakers (right left), and Surround back speakers (right left). My question is, what would I plug in since I only have 5.1 speaker package. Do I just plug in the surround speakers and leave the surround back speakers empty? Thank you

I don't think it will be a problem.

From what I read, you should be able to do this. No need to get 7.1 yet since I have never seen it being used yet in TV or movies. I have heard that there are 7.1 CD's though.

I was wondering, since 2 of the channels won't be used, does that have any bearing on wattage when it comes to the other speakers. Probably not, but I thought it was possible.

Set your amp to the 5.1. mode. If at a later date you want to add 2 rear speakers. make sure they match your other speakers ( a must) same brand etc. then just select 7.1 . I have my system set up in the 7.1. mode and it does help in giving you a 360 sound fiels stewee

un-used surround back speakers

I have this model and this is what CC has on thier web page.
Pioneer A/V Receiver (VSX-816-K)

7.1-channel surround sound: This system gives you seven channels of audio at 110 watts each. If you don?t need (or want) the full 7.1-channel experience, no worries? use the two extra rear surround amplifiers to help drive your main speakers. That?s an extra 220 watts up front.

24 look at the operating instructions book just to make sure. also here is the link to Pioneer.

...just hook up the 5 speakers, no problem. In the receiver set-up procedures there is a section in which you will tell your receiver that you have NO back surrounds speakers.

The receiver will put out slightly more power into 5 speakers all operating at the same time versus all 7 (or 6) speakers operating at the same time. The emphasis is on slighlty. However, this is not a big difference and should not in any way affect your decision in the future to add 2 more indentical (that is indentical... the same model or at least with the same exact tweeter) speakers to the back. Usually not a big sound difference unless the rear of the room is extra wide.
