surround sound and tv sound

I have a dvd player component hookup to my tv. My question is how do i get sound through my tv AND surround sound system? If i want to listen to a dvd through just my tv speakers or if i want to crank it up and listen through my surround sound system what do i do? Do i put an optical port into my receiver and then run the white and reds into my tv. please help. Thanks in advance

You may have to change a setting on the DVD player... Some brands you have to change a setting to out put toslink over HDMI, most brands you will not have to change a thing.
