Question

Surface Pro 3 vs Lenovo ThinkPad 10

Jun 25, 2014 5:52PM PDT

I'm a heavy tablet user (currently have a Sony Xperia Tab Z), but would really like a tablet-sized (and weighted) *something* that can meet my occasional personal need for a laptop + my heavy tab usage. I'm one of those people who do not leave the house without my tablet, but can really go without a laptop for a good long while. My personal laptop use is limited to putting media into the tablet, occasional *very* basic photo editing, using word for job applications (updating my CV, writing a cover letter, looking online for a job), writing longer e-mails, and backing up data from one external hard drive to the other. However, I use my tablet for movie watching, internetting, music, reading books + comics, playing games, short e-mails. The tablet, I use everyday, and the laptop maybe twice a week, if that. So, I am looking for a tablet that can eliminate the need for my occasional laptop use.

I have distilled what's available out there to two that I feel can do what I want, but am having trouble deciding between the two. As the title suggests, my two choices are:

- Surface Pro 3
- Lenovo ThinkPad 10

Pros and cons for both. The Pro 3 is a beautiful machine that I feel can do what I want with minimum accessories (the type cover, dock), but is expensive and large (would not fit into my everyday bag, which I guess would mean that I still keep my tab). The Lenovo is the same size (more or less) as my tab, but it's a slower machine, and I think I would need a lot of accessories to make it work (dock, keyboard, cover), especially since it does not read external hard drives without a dock.

I guess the most important things to me would be:

1. Portability (which points to the Lenovo).
2. Ability to read external hard disks (which points to the Surface).

Not quite sure how to move forward from here - any suggestions based on what I am looking for? Are there other tabs/hybrids out there that can meet my specs (I've also thought about the Surface Pro 2, but it's rather heavy)?

Thanks very much!!

Microsoft to me is a turn off.

I guess you may have not seen the carnage as they have walked away from their prior hardware messes. Always chasing the new and shiny I worry that a repeat of the Windows Phone debacles (there are more than one) so Microsoft would be a tough sale for me.

Answer
Surface 3 pro, thankpad 10, surface 2 pro

1.In fact, i'm not keen on the new surface pro. 13 inch bings bad portability. because nobody want to take a long time with it on his hands. i prefer to think it as a laptop.
2.Compare to the former, thinkpad 10, with z3795 cpu, provides lower performence. But if you are not hign game fans, I believe it's enough for you. Atom z3795 is better than Core 2 used in laptop.

it really depends on your needs. If you often go out with your tablet, surface 3 pro is too heavy and big as a laptop to you. If you need hign-performence tablet repalce the laptop, i recommend surface 2 pro, that provides the same performence and more protable size.

Well the Surface 3 is

1.76 pounds and the Lenova is 1.3 pounds. I would take the Surface all day over the Lenova because screen resolution, power, pen apps and the bigger screen. Comparing the Atom z3795 to the Core 2 is like comparing a 2014 Chevy Impala to a 2006 Pontiac Grand AM.
