??? Supporting arguments for laws forbidding

multiple spouses.

Why should it be illegal for a man to have multiple wives (or vise versa)?

It is plain as can be that you really do want to share him and see if "her" training tricks can improve what yours couldn't. Wink

Had a wife once. Decided I wanted a new pickup more.

Good decision, never talked back, went where I wanted it to when I wanted it to, didn't rant and rave if I accidently dropped hamburger wrappers on the floor and left them there for a couple of days.

Now, I have to admit the pickup guzzled almost as much as the ex wife but even premium gas was cheaper than the Crown Royal the ex insisted on...

My kids??? hehehe I have heard the phrase not wrapped tight enough, wrapped to tight And mind warped! LOL
I used to pull some of the meanest tricks on the kids!
One time we were watching a scary movie and I was going to turn it off when the kids begged me to watch it! After a bit I had two little ones in my lap and the two oldest on the floor on each side of my chair, when the hand started crawling across the cellar floor I slowly reached my hand down and crawled it across the oldest ones face! LOL I had 4 kids jumping about 3 feet off the floor screaming, while I was dying with laughter!
After that one the kids nearly beat me to death! LOL
Needless to say when we watched the next scary movie none of them wanted to sit by me! LOL We still laugh over this one almost 30 years laterHappy I know I am evil! LOL

While thinking on that one, think about how many first century Christians probably did have multiple wives, unless they wanted a position of authority in a church.

1 Timothy 3:2 - A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
1 Timothy 3:12 - Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
Titus 1:6 - If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.

In the O.T. relationships between husband and wife are often spoken of in the singular, even when speaking of those who had more than one. The same singular sense is used in the NT concerning relationships between husband and wife, so considering the days, trying to use a language's singular sense to oppose plural marriage moves outside past scriptural use of it.

Is God against polygamy? Well he didn't do anything to stop it in the OT, and even seemed to endorse it at times, such as the following passage about King David.

I Samuel chapter 12 - "Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul; 8 And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things."

Examination of that incident shows that God's concept of infidelity and adultery isn't necessarily the modern day's concept of it. David had multiple wives and wasn't adulterous through that, but rather through violation of the marriage covenant of Uriah and Bathsheba.

In Deuteronomy 21 - God's law speaks of inheritance rights for a man with multiple wives.

Argument in support of laws forbidding multiple spouses? Because men tend to leave these wives all over the country without a clue. LOL

A lady I knew married a man after going with him for several months. His brother and best friend attended the wedding and neither mentioned the fact that he already had five wives scattered all over the country.

who owns what with any accuracy.

Presently the courts are pretty satisfied with what is theirs is theirs and what is his is theirs and what is hers is hers.

Even forgetting about divorce it would make dividing an estate impossible. Imagine the bickering - "I don't care if she was the first wife, half her home is mine and all of my home is mine!" "No it isn't because it was mine before he met you but he got your place with money that was half mine so half your place is mine plus the half that was his is mine too so..."

Do you mean multiple marriages where some spouses are not aware of the existance of the others? Or do you mean that all spouses are as fully aware as it's possible to be and still get married?

The latter

All individuals involved are quite aware of the others. Think of the old Mormon polygamists.

"Think of the old Mormon polygamists."

You mean where the wives are all to be subserviant to the wishes of their husband? to obey and never question? etc?

One wife (at a time) is plenty. Imagine fielding inane questions like "Does my butt look big in this outfit?" from multiple sources. And just where do you ladies think we are going in our boxers at 8:30pm when we leave the room? Not to mention multiple Mother-in-laws. That's what she's got now! (just snip 'good' and insert 'great')

Unless he's bringing something else to the party, I'd have to decline. We have discussed adding a wife who wants to do the cooking, cleaning, and errands, the wife stuff, but there are some kinks in that plan, too.

It's tough to arrange, I guess.

Ummm...are we getting into a kinda weird area? ?
