supported maximum memory?

Nov 7, 2009 8:14AM PST

hello. help would be really good at this point. PLEASE!
problem: asus n51vn laptop. i cannot get a straight answer on how much memory i can install on this laptop. running windows 7 rc build 7100.

i've checked site after site. some say 4 gigs. some say 8 gigs?? asus has no idea. i have 4 installed and would like to put in 8.

crucial scan said: Maximum Memory Capacity: 8388608 MB (impossible)
Currently Installed Memory: 4096 MB
Available Memory Slots: N.A.
Total Memory Slots: 2
Dual Channel Support: N.A.
CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
CPU Family: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9600 @ 2.80GHz Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9600 @ 2.80GHz
CPU Speed: 2128 MHz

after reading this scan i emailed crucial and they said:
"I did find conflicting information about the maximum as well. I would recommend checking with Asus for the final say on that."
which i tried to do. no go. soooo...

i ran pc wizzard, everest, and fresh diagnose. fresh diagnose said i have 8 billion + bytes of max process memory?? is that 8 gigs of physical ram, or a max cache?

i give up. if there are any other diagnostic tools that someone knows of or any advise at all i would so much appreciate it!

thanx bon

What model?
Nov 7, 2009 9:45AM PST

What version of the laptop?
We need the rest of the model.

If it's the ASUS N51VN X1A then the max is 4GB of RAM.
If it's the ASUS N51VN A1 then the max is 8GB of RAM.

So is it the X1A or is it the A1?

memory??
Nov 7, 2009 11:36AM PST

ok. i looked at my invoice from tiger direct. it's a1. i didn't realize i was looking at to different models. that explains it. thank you so very much! i didn't wanna spend $300 + to upgrade just to find out i couldn't.
i think sometimes when you over think things you miss the obvious. i tend to over think. thank you once again.
cnet is by far the best site for help and support, which is why i always seek help here when i get stumped.
since i'm already posting, if anyone knows where the heck to get 64 bit drivers for this asus that would be awesome!
i've contacted asus and they just don't have the support for this model. i'm not sure why. i've been picking and choosing from various models. it's a pain. sooo... any ideas??

thanx again bon

Drivers?

What kind of drivers? Graphics card drivers?

asus laptop
Nov 8, 2009 12:35AM PST

well i wish i could find a site to give me all the drivers. i'm going to be reinstalling windows 7 when my upgrade comes in. i have a few that i saved from various sites.
nvidia geforce gt240m ddr3 1 gig is my biggest problem. whatever one i have in there now isn't right. it flickers at start up. the one on nvidias site isn't supported by this laptop. when i do a "scan my pc for graphics driver" it can't find it. cuda??? is also something my graphics card supports if that helps.
express gate is also an issue. i cannot find a driver that will install.
i don't understand the lack of support for this model. i prefer asus. i have another asus laptop and 2 pcs with asus motherboards. never any problems.
if you need anyother specs let me know. any help at all would work.
and i did check 5 sites on this n51vn-a1 and as you said this model does support 8 gigs.

Drivers
Nov 8, 2009 3:05AM PST

Well, I checked Asus' site for driver updates and it seems like the only OS they support for your model is Vista 32-bit. They seem to be a little behind.

For your GPU, the only thing you should have to do is go to Nvidia's site, click Drivers, select GeForce 200M Series and then select the OS which would be Windows 7 64-bit. If that's not the right driver, then I wouldn't know what else to do.

Sometimes drivers are downloaded through Windows Update, but I don't know how often that happens.

OKAY
Nov 8, 2009 3:21AM PST

I think on Asus' website they only give you the option to choose drivers from whatever operating system was already installed when they shipped that model.
I checked the G72 model and they have the ASUS ExpresssGate Utility for Win7. You could try installing that. It's under the Windows 7 64-bit section. I'm not sure if it would work on a different model but I don't think the utilities are model-specific. Don't take my word for it, though.

drivers
Nov 8, 2009 10:20PM PST

i just don't get the whole asus thing. i have an older laptop. it came with vista 32 which i immediatly dumped, an put in 64. i always do a clean instal when i buy a computer. to much preloaded crap.
anyways, they had all the 64 bit drivers for that model. i think i'm gonna do what you suggested an grab my drivers from different asus models.
nvidia does not have the driver i need so i an going to check microsoft. i don't usually get drivers from them but in this case i may have to make an exception.
i'll try the express gate from that other model. it'll prob. work.
thanks for your help. if you think of anything else feel free to respond.

thanx again

"supported" = 4GB
Nov 7, 2009 8:42PM PST

You asked what is supported and since the maker has said 4GB if you exceed that then that is not supported by its maker.

Maybe you wanted to see if the HARDWARE did more than what the maker supported? No one should answer that. That's like OVERCLOCKING where you are left without anyone to ask for support.

What?
Nov 8, 2009 3:08AM PST

I'm confused now. Bon was asking what the maximum amount of RAM the Motherboard supported. If the max is 8GB and the makers only put 4GB in it, then it can still handle 8GB...

Supported versus what might work?
Nov 8, 2009 3:37AM PST

I know this story too well. If you go beyond the maker has told you then if there is any problem you won't have any traction with the maker to fix it.

That is support. If you want to take the chance, do that.

memory
Nov 8, 2009 10:09PM PST

asus support didn't give me answers on the memory. they told me that they didn't support 64 bit drivers. the asus n51vn-a1 model supports 8 gigs. the asus n51vn-x1a only supports 4 gigs. they're two different laptops altogether, so therefore i will not be overclocking.

Without 64 bit drivers. Why do this?
Nov 8, 2009 11:04PM PST

I've seen this story too often. Support is telling you where the support ends. They are just being nice by not saying no.
