Question

superfish / visual discovery - unwanted intruder!

Mar 8, 2015 3:05AM PDT

i received a notification from AVG that a program called 'Superfish / Visual Discovery' has installed itself on my computer without my permission.

so far i've followed all instructions I found online but have not found the unwanted software on my computer or listed in any certificates settings in browsers.

so.. instructions for deleting or uninstalling Superfish or Visual Discovery from my computer don't work as no such programs showed up. I performed 4 diff types of scans including malewarebytes and no threats were found. And a repeated them tonite. no threats were detected.

articles i've found mostly focus on Lenovo brand laptops and only a few about superfish on computers. i don't have a lapto and my PC is not a Lenovo brand.

can anyone help me figure out what to do?

hi Dafydd,

i just called AVG re: superfish. got mixed messages from them.. but they said you only need to worry if your computer is a Lenovo. On the other hand they wouldn't tell me how to remove it and finally I got out of them that AVG had actually installed it. go figure.
?

i can't tell if my computer or my browsers are infected. i can see superfish in the firefox add ons.. but it says: 'install' ? not uninstall or delete or remove.

previously i tried searching for superfish in IE and Chrome browsers also nothing showed up.

cheers

I read this the other day and didn't connect. I thought Lenovo had released a patch for this.

Answer
What TYPE of "Noticification from AVG"?
Mar 8, 2015 3:30AM PDT

Did you receive an email notifying you of the problem, or was this an actual alert from your AVG antivirus program which you have installed on your computer?

If it was an email, then it's a scam and is probably trying to get you to click on an infected link, or possibly get you to purchase a product.

On the other hand, if your installed AVG program alerted you of the problem, then it should tell you exactly which files were detected and which ones should be removed.

The instructions in the previous post by Dafydd are good procedures if you actually are infected, but it would be nice to know what type of notification you received.

Hope this helps and let us know more.
