SunJRE1.4.2.05,Firefox.9.2& Moz1.7.1 How to Instal&which 1st

Jul 13, 2004 7:20AM PDT

*Moz 1.7.1, Sun JRE 1.4.2.05 Firefox 0.9.2Which to inst. 1st?*
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Have Moz.1.4 plus IE 5.5, Win98SE, P3, 256, 40gigs & old MS JVM.
Having read that if I use Ms JVM removal tool and inst. Sun won't be
able to enter MS Update & hotmail. Therefore I wish to slowly migrate to
Moz. for all but MS sites but to retain current for access.
Have downld'd (saved to my Docs) the 3 above programs with intent of
using Firefox w/Java enabled as main browser, Moz.171 with increasing
use as I become comfortable, and only having Sun Java inside Mozilla so
as to not interfere with Ms when it's needed. How to do this?? Believe I
must uninst. Moz.1.4 before I begin. Have exported Moz. Bookmarks to my
docs for re=inst in new 1.7 & Firefox. Also ccopy of IE Favorites.

Please understand: I'm a know nothing user who has never been able to
create a valid path barely using copy& paste & min. L.Click drag from 1
folder to another or R.click and send to, but can follow explicit instr.
fairly well. Exmp: Install Java to C:\windows\application
data\mozilla\plugins. Can type it without knowing why\ or/ or? I believe
where I saw this example the next line down noted: Besure to note Double
Forward Slash. Very Important! The exmpl only had single slashes!! Where
would double belong?? I couldn't guess!

The JRE is full Win32 off line installer exe.

Should I first install Moz. 1.7.1 and then JRE directing (how?) to
inside Moz folder then exe. the Firefox ? How to tell Firefox where java
is? Or..Java first (how to keepout of windows?) Can I, using Explorer, find un- exe'd java installer and right click "move to" the (now) first installed Firefox or Moz.1.7.1? How then to exe. it? Or if I then close Moz or Firefox and then re-open one, will they find and auto exe. the new java? Some where saw a note that must be connected to net (on dial up) when exeing Java for it to be able to auto fetch some necessary files. Is this correct?

Am desperate to do this now after procrastinating ever since Firebird .7
which I have saved but not exe'd. due to java confusion. Worse, I'm
concerned If I screw up the attempt with Java, I won't be able to access
boards to ask for further help .

Thanks in Advance for a handheld install!! Confused

Some need step by step instructions. Sadly, I just installed the browsers and then the JRE and didn't think about it. I pressed the return key a lot, but that's all I remember. Sorry I didn't take notes.

Thanks for quick reply. One question extra: Having AVG scanned all above progs on dwnload, should I disable AVGCC during install process to avoid corrupting any possible included drivers??? Thanks again! Happy

I didn't.

I left Free AVG running. Sorry, but the install was uneventfull and nothing extraordinary was done. Mostly tap the return key.

Re: SunJRE1.4.2 etc. Instal Update : Disaster!

Installed Both Moz. 1.7.1 & Firefox seemed ok. Then installed JRE. All seemed good until tried to log on here. Unable to log on (password). Posting now via temp. password after un-instal all. Suspect corrupted downloads. Are any of the following dwnld'd sizes significantly at variance?
Moz.1.7.1 listed@ 11.7mbs. Received@ 11.4mbs.
Firefox0.9.2 listed@4.9mbs Received@ 4.84mbs.
JRE1_4_2_05 off-line exe List@ 14.91 Rec@14.9.
When attempted to import IE Favs. got: Firefox: Illegal operation, Exception:e06d7363h in module msvcrt.dll@017f:78008fa5. Will bbe shut down.
Uninstalled; re-installed w/out IE fav import and seemed ok.
Looking in Java de ****** (in Moz.1.7.1) found (I think): Error loading URL <xstringbundle>exception:"component returned failurecode: 0x804b000a[ns110service.new channel]
nsresult:0x804b000a(unknown)location: "JSFrame::CHROME://venkman/content/venkman-url.loader.js::get channel for URL::line 50"data:NO

I think this means the entire day was a write off!
Have now un-installed everything! Reset to get former reg. Used reg. cleaner to remove all mention of above.

I am now afraid to re- install from downloaded files as may be corrupt (all or which?) but given my dial up took total of 3 1/2 hours to download these am hesitsant to re dwnld not knowing what caused orig. corruption and how to prevent same again! HEEELLP!

Thanks for twisting your brains into a knot over this!

Cnet does go off into the deep end from time to time. Not a good test of your setup.

There is an issue if one installs Moz and Firebird and uninstalls one or the other and that breaks the other. Easy to fix, run the install of the one you want to keep.

Unsure where your issue lies, but your experience is not common, but logging into Cnet is not assured at all times.

Bob, is it safe to install the browser kept on top of the present installation? Would like to keep my settings and cookies.

Thanks,

Glenn

My settings and CNet cookies stayed. Of course, my luck seems better than average at times.

Instal update # 2: SUCCESS!!
Jul 17, 2004 5:01PM PDT

Got all new copies (just in case) and after deleting all,DOSing to reg restore date(oldest),defragging and all that stuff, started over. Did custom install this time and asssoc. only Mozilla. This worked well. Apparently this Jave req. IE SP2 minimun. I was 17 click links in when I finally noticed this. That was cause of major error in Venkman and crash.

Only problem was old Moz. bookmarks and their associated passwords and cookies. This drove me nuts with erasing password, deleting cookie and repeating. They must be in a read only. Kept coming here and not being able to login in. Soulution turned out to be to forget about it! Start a completely new Profile, enter manually and record fresh. Problem solved. Decided to use just Mozilla 1.7 for now. Thanks for posts. Happy
