Sumvision 1GB MP3 Player & Windows XP

Jul 17, 2005 12:06AM PDT

Could someone please help me!

I bought a sumvison 1gb M18 mp3 player with fm radio, I had problems with it so contacted the dealer and now have a replacement. I'm still having problems and I'm wondering if it's me or my pc.

I'm using windows xp and media player 10. I've downloaded tracks from a legal site (tesco) but I cannot (however hard I try!) save them onto my mp3 player so that they play. They are definately on the player because I can see them when I look at the device through the pc and they will play from the player through media player. When I try to play them on the player itsef it says 'format error' and turns itself off.

I have checked the licences and they say the tracks can be syncronized, I've tried downloading directly to the player form tesco's site, I've tried synchronizing using media player and I've tried copying and pasting the wma files whilst in my documents.

This is driving me mad as the whole reason I bought the thing was to save downloaded tracks to it.

Can someone please help before I go insane!!!!

Thanks in advance

One problem I ran into
Jul 17, 2005 12:52AM PDT

The owner had formatted the USB drive to NTFS. A message like yours appeared. I don't know why they did that 3 times. I'd fix it and send back a note not to format it...

Ok, I'm lost now!

How or can I fix this?

I'm lost too.

You never said if you formatted the usb drive in question. However, if you did, do it again and select the FAT32 option.

No need to format?

I haven't formatted anything and I don't think I need too. I'm using xp and the manual says that it doen't need any drivers or anything. I'm relying on plug and play and device manager says the device is working properly.

Do I need to do something else?

You could have checked the volume or drive's format and see that it is FAT32?

Please do so we can move past this issue.

Apologies

My apologies, but if I knew what you were talking about I would assist.

I have gone into device manager and popluated the details of the device, it says the partition style is 'Master Boot Record (MBR). Is this what you are talking about?

In Explorer (My Computer), right click on the drive letter and select properties. The file system is noted.

Ok, now I'm progressing - the file system is FAT

Can I do this........
Jul 17, 2005 1:58AM PDT

If I click format, it automatically gives me the option of FAT32. Is that what I should do.

I'm really sorry for my blondeness and/or ignorance & I appreciate your help!

No. We don't want to format it.

From the box it's in the right file system. I noted the usual issue since it's the most common gaffe with these players.

Now you need to re-read the instructions and use their software to put a song or MP3 onto the device.

Still not working

The manual says nothing at all about transferring music onto the player - it's more than useless! The palyer never came with any software, just a mini cd which has a sound converter tool - to convert voice recordings, a firmware updae tool and a **** partitioning tool.

Sounds like the famed AUTOBABY.

If the unit is this bad, just return it for something that works.

This looks DOA with no life support.

but will an mp3 player play wma files?

This one will

The mp3 player I'm talking about will (or should) play mp3 and wma files

SUCCESS!!!!

Having already returned the unit once and waited nearly four weeks for a replacement I am loathe to go through it again.

However as tracks ripped from a CD do work I burnt the tracks to cd then ripped them to media player. Then rather than synchronising with media player I dragged and dropped the tracks and it works(there must be an easier way).

I guess it must be something to do with the licences - even though the license info confirms I'm allowed to synchronise & burn etc.

Thanks for all you help everyone!

That's a clue.

In WMP I never enable DRM since it will trip up some players. It's in Tools, Options somewhere.
