summer olympics

Mar 14, 2004 9:47PM PST

Hopefully all nations particularly Greece will keep cool heads but at the same time be vigilant. The following is just an example of what can happen.

Tanzanian marathon runner Richard Mbewa was shot dead while in training for the 1984 Olympics. His killer was a policeman who thought he was fleeing the scene of a crime.

Hi, Mary Kay.

On this morning's Today Show they were saying that the U.S is thinking of pulling its athletes from the Athens Games unless there's a vast improvement in anti-terrorist precautions. Talk about letting the terrorists win!

Hi Dave:

Greece's record on terrorism has been abysmal. I wonder if they'd let us provide our own security for our team? Otherwise, I'm not sure what our options might be.

It would make bush look weak too close to the election.

To err on the side of caution in spite of political ramifications would show leadership not previously evident. IMO, we don't need a repeat of Munich regardless on the impact on the athletes.

Hi, Patrick.

That would be a bad move in ways too numerous to count. Yes, it would be safer for the athletes. But it would put the US in the position of bad guy vis a vis the Olympics for the second time in 20 years, not a good thing PR-wise (you do remember our Moscow boycott, right?) Secondly, it would put the lie to Bush's claim that we can all live life more or less normally while also fighting terrorism. I suspect the rel story is that we've offered our "assistance" to the Greek government in anti-terrorist preparations, and so far those offers have been rebuffed, so like a good Texan Bush is upping the ante...
