Question

Suggestions for cheap build

Apr 10, 2017 3:56PM PDT

I need a desktop with some serious number crunching ability for Uni, but like all university students I don't have a huge budget.

Here is my current build:
AMD Ryzen 1700X Processor
ASRock AB350 Pro 4 Motherboard
Corsair Vengenance LPX DDR4 3200 8GB RAM x 2
Corsair Force 120GB NVMe M2 SSD
Corsair Hydro H60 AIO Liquid CPU Cooler
Deepool Tesseract SW Mid Tower case
Thermaltake TR2 550W Power Supply

That is stage one, in a few months I will be adding a graphics card (but not to large as I am not really a gamer) and storage.

The parts as listed here are costing $1201.

Any suggestions before I buy?

Thanks Dafydd,

Thats part of stage two, but for now I will only have windows 10 and essential apps running on this SSD. Stage two includes a 512 m2 SSD and 4tb HDD.

Do you see any issues with compatibility?

Right.

Good to see you have a plan. Others will come in on the other parts. I only need a midrange PC.

Answer
FORGET THAT PSU.
Apr 10, 2017 4:33PM PDT

Specs show a dual rail and too low to push good GPUs.
+12v1@14A,+12v2@15A,

Shop for a single rail and let's see that +12V hit 30A if possible.

Look at this Crucial M.@ SSD and save another $30 . Crucial makes a good product.

Uni can take a tally on the storage.

But he has a plan on this. Good to see someone think it out.

$30 is $30 for the same size drive

That might save him enough to get a better PSU as Bob suggested ....

Check this out for $116 ( I like saving money ) ..
Last week I ordered a SSD from Amazon Warehouse Deals like this and saved $25 .
The description said exactly the same thing , the corner of the box was bent .

Amazon

If I bought from Amazon is there some issue with connecting to Australian 240V power, or would these items be for US power?

SSDs run off internal power
Apr 10, 2017 7:44PM PDT

Not the mains directly so shop local if you can and for the PSU, just ask when you pick one.

The short answer is you do not want split +12V rails like that first one. It will buckle under load of a good GPU.

Good idea to tell that part

I'm not sure if your PSU is switchable
