hello, not an expert, just sharing my experience, I have a sony trv 38 and it takes great pix . . . the mike input is a (i assume stereo) mini jack. I mount a sennheiser mke300 (?) on it. not as good as a lav or handheld, but if i get very close to talent in a quiet room it works well. the in-cam mike is not bad at all.
Don't know for sure but i doubt a pro-type level mike with xlr will go into a consumer piece mini plug with just an adaptor without complaint. I think the levels are different. I seem to recall having to rent a step-down converter when making dubs from a pro SP deck to consumer VHS.
