Lenovo offers a Linux laptop

I can't say which distribution but you can always change it. Lenovos I've seen come in black. Painting them is not advised. They are quite sturdy...among the better made. My peeve with some laptops is crappy keyboards. I like the IBMs...Oops, I mean Lenovos. Good luck.

Take a look at the ASUS M50 (15.4") and M70 (17"). Newegg.com has some great deals on them at the moment. The following links are some of the best deals-

ASUS M50VM-X1- 2.26GHz P8400, 1024mb nVIDIA 9600M GS, WXGA, $1099.99 ($200 off) LINK- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220340

ASUS M70Vm-X1- 2.53GHz T9400, 512mb nVIDIA 9600M GS, WUXGA (1920x1200), $1399.99 ($200 off) LINK- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220346

ASUS G50V-X1- 2.26GHz P8400, 512mb DDR3 VRAM nVIDIA 9700M GT, WSXGA+ (1680x1050), $1349.99 ($150 off), LINK- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220379

All ASUS notebooks come with a standard 2-year warranty plus 1-year of accidental damage coverage. They also have the best tech support and customer service that I've ever experienced! Good luck!

ASUS, part 2
by IgoZoomX2 / October 25, 2008 6:35 PM PDT

As far as color/style is concerned, the ASUS models are only available as shown- white isn't an option. I have no experience with running any flavor/version of Linux on an ASUS, so I can't offer any input on that.

Let me suggest a very informative website where you can speak with existing ASUS users and likely find answers to your questions- it's called NotebookReview.com and they have a brand-specific user forums including ASUS. Here's a link for you- http://forum.notebookreview.com/forumdisplay.php?f=19

As for finding a new laptop with a white exterior, the only one I can think of is the HP dv5t Special Edition. Unfortunately, it is only offered with Intel integrated graphics. The previous edition HP dv6875se is still available thru Best Buy (in white) and it has a 256mb nVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS discrete graphics card, but the CPU is only a 1.83GHz T5550. Here's a link to the product page if you want to see it- http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8776176&type=product&id=1204332255372 It's currently on sale for $180 off of the $1049 regular price.

One other site you should check out- XOTICPC.com They are a reputable reseller and deal primarily in ASUS and SAGER brand notebooks. They offer free "skins" on some models, which can be a print or solid color. They might be able to hook you up with a solid notebook with a white exterior! It'd be worth an email to ask them.

Good luck!

One more thing....
by IgoZoomX2 / October 25, 2008 6:49 PM PDT

I forgot to mention..

ASUS is the first company to offer a 15.4" notebook that includes a 10-key numeric keypad, just as all 17" desktop replacement systems have. It's a very cool innovation and I'm surprised that other companies haven't followed suit...so far, that is.

ASUS M70Vm Spec Sheet
by IgoZoomX2 / October 25, 2008 11:55 PM PDT
In reply to: One more thing....

Here's a direct link to the ASUS specification sheet- http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=5&l2=133&l3=704&l4=0&model=2364&modelmenu=2

I've also came up with another possibility for you- the Sony VAIO FW, which comes in WHITE. Here's the link to the CTO (configure-to-order) page for it- http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SYCTOProcess?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&LBomId=8198552921665519347

It starts at $899, but I'd suggest upgrading to the 2.26GHz P8400 processor, 3GB memory, 320GB Hard Drive, 512mb ATI Radeon Mobility HD 3650 and the total is still only $1239.99. There is also a $100 high-resolution display option that is worth a look, too.

BluRay Read Only
by IgoZoomX2 / October 26, 2008 5:49 PM PDT
In reply to: Blu ray

BluRay Read-Only automatically includes CD/DVD Read/Write PLUS BluRay Read capability...the implication is that it can't WRITE in BluRay format.
