Suddenly, no shortcut arrows

Jun 30, 2010 6:26AM PDT

The arrows are suddenly gone from my shortcuts, both on the desktop and in Explorer views! Noticed it right after Tuesday's (6.29.2010) Win7 patches, which may or may not be relevant.

So I looked up the problem on several forums, and tried the answers there. Tried running chkdsk, no joy. Tried multiple system restores, no joy. Tried resizing the type and icons, no joy.

Finally I tried loading msconfig, and doing a selective startup with all my "system startup items" but NO "system services" and BINGO. Arrows were back.

So, was it aero? I tried a normal boot and turned off aero. Nope! So the culprit is some other system service, but which one?

I could try selectively disabling each individual service and rebooting over and over again, but it would take me all day, so before I go that route...

Anyone have any idea what's gone wrong?
