Question

Suddenly games run like crap??!?!?!?

Apr 18, 2018 11:35PM PDT

Hey guys, As title suggests. Not entirely sure what but something has happened, I build my current rig myself about a year ago never had any problems with it. Suddenly go to play warcraft and my fps is garbage... Always pulling min 60 fps with higher settings now i have to set eveything to absolute lowest just to get descent fps from it Sad
I also would play Dirty bomb on occasion, haven't touch anything in the settings there now the home screen is laggy as hell and once i get into a server the game can't even get about 10 fps..... Going from running absolutely smooth 60 fps.....
I don't know what but something has happened.....
Pc itself still runs perfectly fine just the gaming experience is garbage now.

Any ideas people?

Answer
Usually driver related.

Why? Microsoft can automatically install a driver and game over. This is why we suggest you disable driver updates and NEVER update drivers without good cause. Newer is not always better for drivers.

There are other small things that can kill performance like https://www.howtogeek.com/224981/how-to-stop-windows-10-from-uploading-updates-to-other-pcs-over-the-internet/

But to get any deeper I want to see a Web Speccy report along with the make, model PSU.
Read how at https://www.piriform.com/docs/speccy/using-speccy/publishing-a-speccy-profile-to-the-web

Hey, Thanks for the reply. Here's my speccy http://speccy.piriform.com/results/6ebofdwGLhYOMIzuuHoLcPi

I know that usually drivers can be an issue and goes without saying windows 10 can be problematic at the best of times. I try to keep all my drivers up to date to avoid problems like this haha....
Let me know what you find out Wink

Sorry but I will disagree.

"keep all my drivers up to date" is the road to ruin. Drivers do not wear out and do not need constant updates. If you find all is working, STOP updating and enjoy the ride.

I'll be back with a Speccy reading later.

Answer
Speccy reading.

Remember I rarely duplicate the web. For example I won't write any prior answer from https://www.google.com/search?q=RX+460+low+fps where folk have solved it. You get to check that out.

I think your comment about keeping drivers up to date is the clue here as this is a known way to performance hell. Disable W10 driver updates and use a set that works. Stand still once it's working well.

Speccy comments:
1. Java. uninstall unless you know why it's installed.
2. Power Profile, I see you already worked that area. Good.

3. NVIDIA Display Driver Service? With an AMD video card?
Why? Also applies to the other NVIDIA components.
If this was mine I'd google up DDU and remove the NVIDIA bits.

4. I see some IN PROGRESS updates. Not only would I finish those but time to CHKDSK /F /R /X all drives. Here's a link on that. https://www.tekrevue.com/tip/fix-hard-drives-chkdsk-windows-10/
Be sure to restart after all this.

5. Some bloatware there. Read https://howtoremove.guide/what-is-malware-protection-live/

6. Killer Networking. I just found a version that had leaking handles. It's technical so read my post at:
https://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/handles-are-killing-your-pc-i-looked-at-mine-and/
The original version showed up on my PC at over 906,000 handles or about 4GB of RAM chewed up. Be sure to see if you have any handle bloat.

7. Many svhost entries. Many network connections from system. Be sure to turn the next thing off.
Read https://www.howtogeek.com/224981/how-to-stop-windows-10-from-uploading-updates-to-other-pcs-over-the-internet/

8. SAMSUNG HD154UI has some signs it is aging. Can this be unplugged for a test run?

9. DNS. May want to test another DNS like 8.8.8.8

There's a lot to work here but your comment about drivers has me the most concerned. I'd at least start with DDU to dust off the Nvidia items.
