Sudden intense lag (Win 7 Pro)

Feb 14, 2011 2:43AM PST

This has happened a few times now. Basically, when I'm on my laptop sometimes (still quite rare but enough to be annoying) I will suddenly get lots of lag. So much so that right clicking does nothing, or it opens the box a few minutes later. Ctrl + alt + delete takes a few minutes to change the screen, last time though I just got a message box telling me it failed. Also, the frames per second goes right down so my mouse moves around choppy and also is a few seconds behind. So basically, horrible.

It hasn't happened when I've been doing particularly intensive but that may just be a coincidence. I don't know what it is so running most times it's happened (it's hard to remember) were:
Google Chrome 9.0.597.98 beta
Windows Live Messenger 2011
Itunes 10.1.2.17
Windows 7 Professional
Display Fusion Pro v3.2.0
Microsoft Security Essentials
Mumble 1.2.2

If anybody knows any problems with my operating system or any of the programs that may be causing it then it would be a great help, thanks!

P.S. Sorry if this is in the wrong place, this seemed the best to me

For starters, BETA is just that.

It's out there for testing so you can report issues.

Also, you can use the old fashioned ways to figure this out. Exit apps until it works better.

This can be machine issues such as an overheating CPU, but I missed what machine. The "full error message" would be nice as well as if you find any clues in the Event Viewer.

More information!

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 1545.

Although I can't remember exactly what the error message was I know it said nothing more than something along the lines of "Ctrl + alt + delete failed, if this continues press esc or restart using the power button".

I've never used the Event Viewer (System) before but from the looks of it, notable events before me restarting the computer are:

Level: Information Source: yukonw7 Event ID: 83 General: "Port A is down" Task Category: None

Level: Error Information source: atikmdag Event ID: 43029 General: "Display is not active" Task Category: DAL

Level: Error Information source: atikmdah Event ID: 52236 General: "CPLIB :: General - Invalid Parameter" Task Category: CPLIB

Level: Warning Information source: Kernel-PnP Event ID: 219 General: "The driver \Driver\EasyRecordAD failed to load for the device Root\MEDIA\0000." Task category: (212)

...just found out I can save the events so here they are (System & Application events):

I assume it was turning on after the restart at about 17:09 as that's when lots of events seem to all start something at the same second.

That's very interesting.

While the Dell 1545 has dozens of models, the ATI failures are a big clue. I've seen that happen when the owner changes or updates the driver. Try using what dell has at dell.com. Use your SERVICE TAG and install the driver dell has there.

Why not uninstall EzRecorder?

Shouldn't be there

I did used to have EzRecorder installed months ago but I uninstalled it. How would I go about getting rid of any traces it left behind which it appears to have done?

I did update the driver for my graphics card but that was a few months ago and I only began to get these bursts of lag a week and a half ago, do you think that might be causing it still?

I looked on the Chrome forums and saw a few people having lag when they open new tabs, but none seem to be as bad as mine is. However, now I think about it I do seem to be opening tabs when this happens (from the best of my memory). So installing normal Chrome (non beta) would fix this, am I right?

How I clean such out.

POWER TOOL WARNING. You've been warned.

I use HIJACKTHIS to remove an old item that didn't uninstall.

And BETA is BETA. The message about this is clear. Sorry if I can't make it clearer.

-> I can't tell how old the machine. Just in case, get out your canned air, shut down, remove the AC, battery and blow out the vents. Hopefully a hairball comes out.

Okay then, thank you for all your help. I'll do all of that and hope this will be fixed, thanks again.
