Stupid question here

May 24, 2005 9:17AM PDT

How do I check my sound card settings on 98SE. I need to know if "line in" is checked. Gone to Control Panel/Sound and that lists only Windows programs. Gone to Multimedia and it just lists the sound SB audioPCI 64D. Can't receive signal from receiver hooked up for recording vinyl to CD. Other threads haven't given specific for checking sound card properties. Help.

Question in this forum!

Does your desktop have a Speaker symbol in the tray in the right bottom of the screen? If not go to Control Panel and double click on the Multimedia Icon. Tick the "Show volume control on the Task Bara'; apply. You should have a speaker symbol in the task bar.

Double click on this icon and it will open out the audio control panel. You can select the input and its volume setting for BOTH playback and Record independently.

Hope this helps.

do you know if your sound card is recognizing an external unit (a receiver/turntable config) that I use for recording vinyl to CD? It used to work, but now it doesn't.

Try this

Your sound card does not "recognise" any input. You have to set the selection.

Once you have checked all the audio wiring to the card try the following:

1) open the volume control panel by double clicking on the speaker icon in the system tray.

2) Make sure that the "line in" mute box ic NOT ticked.

3) Set the "LineIn" volume and the "Volume Control" settings and to almost high.

You should be able to listen to the Line In source through your Sound Card speakers (or through any other stuff connected there).

This means that " ... sound card is recognizing an external unit ..."

For recording, a seperate set of controls have to be set.

1) open the volume control panel by double clicking on the speaker icon in the system tray.

2) Click on Options -> Properties -> Recording.

3) Check the "Line In" box, and OK.

4) A new set of Volume Controls will be shown. Select Line In and set the required volume for recording.

Hope this helps.

I found that my recording had 'mic' selected instead of 'line' Alls well now for recording except my left speaker won't work. I've checked all connections, what now? Thanks for your patience.
