stupid question from comp. dummy

Nov 29, 2003 8:21PM PST

Here it is. I have all these programs running that I have no idea what they are when I turn my computer on. Like if I go to the alt+ctrl+delete button all these programs pop up that are running. They are slowing my computer down. How can I make the dumd ones I do not need to run.....stop running???????? It sounds really confusing but come on......someone understands right??? Happy

click on Start,Run,type in msconfig and hit enter when the box comes up click on the startup tab. Uncheck all the things in here that you don't want to start up.. Click ok...restart computer... when a box pops up that says you are using selective startup click on Do Not show this box again.. you are done

there are so many such programs that it is hard to tell which ones might be needed and which ones are not. however, nothing in the Startup list should be needed for normal Windows operation, so you can disable all the programs in Startup and everything should run. some programs, when run the first time, are helpfully reinserting themselves into Startup because they know you need them so much. deleting random programs from the Ctrl-Alt-Del list by shutting them down isn't a good idea. Startup Cop, available on CNet Downloads, is a good program to help manage what gets started when you boot your computer.
