locate any "so and so dll" file on my computers despite their also being XP Pro boxes.
Believe it or not but EXACT error messages go a long way to helping solve problems by identifying the source.
At this point and without any error message about the best you can do is take a look into your System and Application logs with your Event Viewer. The Event ID number and Event SOURCE are rather important clues.
I have reformated several times on different drives, I keep my documents on a drive just for them, it seems no sooner than I get things the way I want it, I reboot and get a password prompt on bootup, since I don't use a password I just click ok and then before explorer.exe runs, I get these repeated 'unable to run so and so dll, it must close, some times I can access task manager with ctrl-alt-del and run explorer from there, but usually it stops TM as well, I'm wondering if there's a virus that can become active simply by accessing the drive it's on? ie My documents. One thing I know that starts it is a Photoimpact 6 folder that I access, since it doesen't have to be installed to run, and when I do, I have noticed it happening on next reboot, I've never been stumped like this before, I've reinstalled 4 times only to have the same problem, I'm using XP Pro SP3 Celeron 2ghz 3 gigs ddr2 ram, I do have an ide drive mixed with 2 satas, Don't know if it makes a difference, does this sound like any known virus? HELP!
