Studying overseas-need help buying new cell phone, please!

by Wretchosoft / June 30, 2008 11:42 AM PDT

I will be studying in Tokyo, Japan for 7 months (I leave in September) and will then be backpacking eventually ending up in the U.K. I have done some research, and understand that I need a phone with a 2100 freq or a quad band phone to work in Japan. Can anyone confirm this? I am looking to purchase an unlocked phone so that I can freely change out the cards on my travels. As it happens, I am also looking for a new high quality mp3 player. So really my only criterion for a phone is that it work specifically in Japan and also have a full mp3 player. In conclusion, I went to the Nokia store here in Chicago, and loved the N95 8GB, but to my dismay they informed that it will not work in Japan. It's either find a good phone here and hope it works, or wait till I get to Japan, I just don't want to get stuck with a phone that only works in the states, or only works in Japan.

Thank you for any suggestions
