As a student, I have to object to that. If you use the computer to take notes or lug it to school, you need something lighter than 7.8 lbs, and whose battery is going to last longer than 90 minutes to 2 hours.
Pentium M processors match Pentium 4 processors with twice their speed. They provide computers that weigh pounds less than their P4m and A64 counter parts. And if you plan on taking it to school, you'll need the >4.5 hours that the Centrino notebook will provide.
My suggestions are the Dell 8600, 6000, or 9200 at www.delloutlet.com
I am a student that really needs a notebook. What do I need? If my budget tops at about $1400. If I need a good proccessor, XP Pro (reccomended for students), 512 DDR, at least 40 GB of a hard drive, the Works with Powerpoint(Small Business Edition), a pretty good graphics card (for after homework), an internal wireless networking card (b+g),a FREE 1 year warranty, Norton Internet Security, DVD/CD-RW, and a pretty good screen. Where do I go? After lots of research and comparison (mostly to Dell and Toshiba) this configuration came up using the Hp's Pavilion zv5000z. Try it out, and see if it fits your needs http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_series.do?series_name=zv5000z_series&catLevel=2&category=notebooks/hp_pavilion&storeName=computer_store
It really seems to be perfect, but, only if portablity isnt exactly beaming on the top of your list.
