Stuck with Explorer

So this started a few weeks ago when I had received some spy ware when i left for vacation. The result was inability to open Internet Explorer. This prevented me from using Windows Explorer, which negated opening folders and the control panel. When trying to open such programs, i find the task bar, open programs and desktop icons to disappear for 15 seconds and reappearing. This was not an issue for a few weeks, since I was already using Firefox. But my computer is forbidding me to open any documents up until "My drive is cleared of unnecessary files." And this is impossible without open a Windows Explorer. I'm running XP SP2 on a VAIO desktop. I've tried downloading IE7 to give me a fresh explorer, but the installation window says that it cannot install IE7. I would prefer to not reboot my computer again. PLEASE HELP! I'm very desperate.
