General discussion

strong signal, but very slow speed? how come?

Mar 26, 2009 12:38PM PDT

i am using a dsl wireless system at home. sometimes when i use it, the status lists the signal as excellent, but it takes forever to load a page. and i can actually get faster speed if i connect to other people's wireless internet which as a weak signal.

so what is going on here? i am using zonealarm firewall.

Then in short form.

You are using something technical so you are forced to learn more. Here's the short version.

1. Router defaults.
2. Change only what's needed to support your ISP.
3. WPA for security.
4. Leave SSID broadcasting.

Good luck.

DSL Plan
Mar 28, 2009 9:21AM PDT

Well, if you're getting faster internet speed while connected to someone else's wireless signal, it could be that person has a better service plan from a different ISP. What plan do you have and with which ISP?

Have you always experienced a slow internet connection? You don't give any indication that anything has changed recently.

Assuming you have everything set up correctly, it could be a problem with the DSL line itself. Try a couple of speed test sites to check your actual download speeds. Here are a couple of sites that you can try:

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
http://www.speedtest.net/

Post the results and give a little more detail about your service plan if you can.

no, it is not due to different service provider or plan.

i use the same dsl provider, but the speed varies. sometimes, the dsl signal is strong, but the page won't even load.
