Here I ran wires to the other rooms for the speakers. No networking.

Hello folks,
I am curious to find some cheap solutions to stream music wirelessly around my small apartment. Few things I thought of
- Having a low cost music server running all the time. It should have a feature of installing HDD in the box or connect to the external HDD through USB port. This system can be accessible in smartphones (Android) and I can play the music from HDD on my iPod dock through my smartphone. I wonder if such hardware exists. I know of Sonos and stuff but its awefully expensive. Is there any cheaper, no frills solution (except running a low cost PC and Raspberry Pi)
- I noticed that almost all routers nowadays have a USB port. I wonder if I hook up a USB hard drive to this port, can I access this HDD using a smartphone app? I have old Asus WL-520GU router (has a USB port) but not too sure if this can be achieved on it (without installing Tomato and stuff, too geeky for me). If any router has this feature in-built, I won't mind spending money on this router. This guy is up for replacement.
- On some forum, I read that the poster says, if the HDD is capable of installing Squeezebox server then its possible to achieve almost what I want to achieve. I was not very sure what kind of HDD he was talking about, any guess?
Anybody has idea how best I can achieve my goal without spending a fortune?
Thanks a ton in advance.
