Mean that there is no assurance it (a)works and (b)anyone including the maker can make it work.
On top of that, when you call one maker they can point a finger at the other maker and you end up getting nowhere.
This is why I connect with Optical for such setups. But then again, settings can be annoying to find. On top of that, not only do you have to set the TV to output on Optical but some APPS have you fishing inside the app to select optical.
-> You are not wrong in thinking "what a mess."
I have a 4K Samsung HDTV (LN40D630M3FXZA) connected by HDMI to an Onkyo 7.2 A/V Receiver (TX-NR626). Both state they are compatible with ARC. The HDMI from the Onkyo comes out of the Main Out and connects to the HDMI on the Samsung designated for ARC. This is the method recommended by the Onkyo manual. I get my signals from a Xfinity/Comcast XG1 4K cable box. I set the audio out on the TV to PCM. When I am viewing regular cable movies on channels like HBO or NBC, I can switch the Receiver to Cable/Sat and the audio plays through my Home Theater Speakers. When I watch a streaming movie on Netflix, Amazon or Hulu, I switch the Receiver to TV/CD and the image on the TV is great but no audio. Audio from all channels and streaming services plays fine through the TV with the receive off in bypass mode.
Has anyone had success playing streaming audio through an A/V receiver and what settings did you use? This seems unnecessarily difficult.
