Question

Strange Windows XP Selecting File Problem?!

Aug 29, 2011 10:58PM PDT

I'm dealing with a rather strange mouse selecting problem with Windows XP. Everytime that I turn on my computer and it starts up, automatically the very 1st computer program has it's file name already selected (and I never click on the mouse to do this at all!)! The same exact thing happens if I click on a folder. Whenever I click on a folder to open it, when it opens the very 1st computer program, or folder, or item in general has it's file name automatically selected for me.

How can I turn this annoying, unwanted, feature off?!

Why Is This A Problem?

First, do you have your mouse options selected so you "single click" on items to open them, versus the standard double-click to open?

But either way, even though the first item is highlighted when you open a folder, does this cause any issues when you select another item to open? As long as you click/select a different item in the folder, it should open the item correctly. Checking a few computers around here, I found a couple which exhibit the same as you have described. None of the users have listed it as a problem since clicking on something else in the folder seems to open things as one would expect.. No extra clicks were necessary to get the job done.

Hope this helps.

Simple Solution

Never mind, I figured out the answer. Apparently if you click on a computer program (the very 1st click before the 2nd/double click), and the computer program is highlighted, if you then click on the "Caps Lock" key on the keyboard then the problem that I talked about in the OP shows up. In order to turn it off all you simply have to do is just simply click on the "Tab" key on the keyboard.
