Strange Shutdown/Restart actions. Malware?

Dec 22, 2007 6:49AM PST

I'm experiencing wierd behaviour with a friend's laptop. When I select the "shut down" option, the computer restarts, and when I choose the Restart option, it goes into sleep mode and will not awaken. Selecting the "Sleep mode" option shuts it down.

What could be the cause and possible solution to this problem? Anyone have an idea?

Several hidden processes running but I'm not too great with tech stuff. Could this be virus related? And could it be a BIOS problem?

Run "Check Disk"
Dec 22, 2007 6:23PM PST

Run "Check Disk"

Path to "Disk Check" is start> control panel> computer management> disk management> right click on your drive (usually C:), choose properties, click> choose "tools" tab> choose error checking, check mark both boxes> start> an applet will appear, choose "schedule disk check"> restart computer, this may take a few hours, a black screen will appear during the start up, let it run till it through.

Get and run registry repair software.

See link:

Some are free, some are not , some are free trials. Choose the one that is best for you.

restart computer > on first/Boot screen press and hold F8 > on next page arrow down to debugging mode > click enter. The computer will run slow in this mode now try it again. Did this repair it? When it restarts again press and hold F8 this time arrow down to run normally. You can run the debugger on most anything in the OS, mail, the net, video, audio anything that seems to be running poorly. Just remember it will run slow and it needs to be set to normal start up when your done

Two thoughts...
Dec 30, 2007 7:00AM PST

1.) Click here and follow the instructions to delete the current power schemes and import a copy of the defaults.
2.) Type sfc /scannow into the Start Menu's search bar or the command line and press enter. It will scan for corrupt Windows files and prompt you to enter your Vista DVD if necessary.

Hope this helps,
John

Problem not resolved <:(
Jan 8, 2008 5:18AM PST

I've tried everything that has been recommended here, and the problem has not gone away... I'm at a loss here.

Are there any other possible solutions or is it likely only a full system recovery will solve the problem?

Is it under warranty? If so, make it their problem.

Be sure to update your backup files before you let the maker have the unit.
