strange shutdown of me system

HI
can anyone advise of any experience with the following shutdown situation?

The computer does not shutdown, it goes to a blank screen and the box keeps running.

However, if you then press keys on the keyboard it goes to a vertically black and orange striped screen momentarilly and then turns itself off.

it does this nearly every time but sometimes it goes to "its now safe to turn your computer off" window and shuts itself off as it should.

Any thoughts will be appreciated.
