Strange reappearing 'MP3' folder on desktop....

May 31, 2006 9:00AM PDT

Hi

Has anyone else experienced this strange phenomena of a folder marked 'MP3' keep appearing on the desktop?

I'm unsure as to whether it's malicious or not, and I've run spyware doctor, NOD32 and adaware but nothing was perceived as a threat.

Are you using any p2p devices?

If so, Where are you downloading your mp3's from?

I don't use any p2p stuff like Kazaa, Bearshare or anything on the virus-ridden Gnutella network...

I haven't installed any spurious software that I know of and none of my security systems pick up on anything.

What is the purpose of a file saying MP3 on the desktop if it isn't spyware or some other malicious beastie?

You can try

You can try to delete the folder in the safe mode. Shut down you computer and when it's starting up, press F8 and it will go into the safe mode. then delete the folder and restart your computer. If that doesn't work below are programs that I use that are FREE that help keep you computer clean of the baddies.

As for all people you should have good virus protection. AVG FREE or AVAST are great virus programs

I use Zone Alarm for my firewall.

Also you need to have measures to stop spyware from getting into your computer. You can get C W Shredder to help remove some and you can also use SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY. Another good spyware remover is AD AWARE and one that stops spyware from getting into your computer is SPYWARE BLASTER. Then when all else fails you can get HIJACKTHIS.

If you use all these tools it will not elminate spyware from getting into your computer, but it will help. Some spyware gets into your computer using the Macromedia Flash player. If you feel that you still might have spyware in your computer, then you can go to TREND MICRO to do another online scan.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your reply.

I'm using NOD32, Windows Firewall, Adaware, Spywareblaster and Spyware Doctor, so i'll give CWShredder a whirl and see how I get on.

Again, thanks for your help.

I would add

I would add Spybot Search & Destroy to your list.

I would also disable the Windows Firewall and use Zone Alarm's Free Firewall. With Zone Alarm, it stops things both ways. With Windows Firewall it only stops incoming but not outgoing.

Also you may want to download HiJack This. It can be downloaded at

http://www.download.com/HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10379544.html

Then put HiJack This in a special folder. Tell it to do a system scan and log file, then copy and paste your results at

http://www.help2go.com/component/detective/

and it will tell you what to checkmark to remove.

Then restart your computer.

Hope this helps.
