Strange minimized window on my desktop

Nov 2, 2006 2:45AM PST

I have an HP media center edition running windows XP SP2. I don't remember exatcly when it started happening but I think it was after I tried to install Azereus.

What it is:
When I start my computer I get a small window that stays minimized and can not be enlarged, closed or gotten rid of in any way. I have been tending to move it to the side and forget about it but I sometimes use the 'tile windows' function and this little window gets put into the mix no matter what I do. I would like to know if anyone knows how to get rid of this little pest. Again I am not sure about the Azereus thing but I sort of remember those two things happening around the same time.

Have you run the scans?

There's no telling what nasties you may pick up even from limited use of P2P software, so the first thing I would do is run full scans with your antivirus and antispyware software. Ewido (now called AVG Antispyware) is one of the best free options available and should detect anything that's plaguing you.

Aside from that check task Manager (ctrl + alt + delete) to find out what processes are running at the time...jot down any that you are not familiar with and look them up through answersthatwork.com and google.com.

Let us know what you find.

I ran all the spyware that i have but nothing came up.

I did all the scans. I deleted all the extraneous files but i still had the problem. If i put the status window into a toolbar on that hides itself then the window goes away. So there is some sort of cloned window or something that goes on when i try to keep the status window on my desktop as a small window. I am content with having the toolbar so thanks for your advice.

JR, Try the following:

Open the Control Panel.
Open Display Properties.
Click the Desktop tab.
Click the Customize Desktop button.
Click the Web tab in the Desktop Items window.
Make sure all checkboxes in this window are un-checked including My Current Homepage.
Restart your computer.
