Strange item on case fans. . .

My new home built PC has six case fans. Each fan has a small device connected to the power cord. It looks like a small capacitor, but I'm wondering if it may be a varistor for sensing temperature to increase/decrease fan speed. I've searched several sites selling fans but I can't find any reference.

Any help or links?
