Strange icon in start menu and scroll bars

This may be an icon or font problem. In the start menu and to the right of menu items where there would normally be arrows showing that there are submenus, I have no arrows but rather a strange figure that looks like a firecracker -- a cylinder with a curly string attached. This problem also exists in many programs that have menu lists. Also the scroll bars in most programs do not have arrows but other strange icons. For example, the bottom scroll icon is not an up arrow but instead an hour glass. Thanks in advance for any help.

What you done to determine what the icon is?

In reply to: Strange icon in start menu and scroll bars

So other than noticing this strange icon. What have you done to determine what it might be?

Have you run antivirus and malware programs?
If we know what you have already done we can suggest other options.

I'm not sure what to do, that's the problem

In reply to: What you done to determine what the icon is?

I know what the icon is supposed to be from the Windows running on my second computer. I have Bitdefendar virus software, Webroot spyware, and Zonealarm firewall running on Windows XP Home. But this is an old problem that predates the installation of this software. I can't remember just when I first noticed it, but I've never been able to identify just what causes it or how to fix it. I was hoping that some one could tell me how to reset, back to the default values, the icons (or fonts) that are in the above mentioned problem areas.
